1. A tote bag // Louis Vuitton Neverfull, Saint Laurent Tote, Longchamp Le Pliage
The first bag I think everyone needs in their collection is a big tote. I'm personally not someone to wear a tote bag on a daily basis but I find them extremely useful for different occasions. You can use a tote for work or school/university because usually, you have to carry books or a laptop, sometimes you pack lunch for the day or you carry a cardigan with you, maybe in the winter months you have a beanie with you and a pair of gloves so for me, a tote is a must. I also like to use them for travelling as a carry-on bag especially if I bring other designer bags that are a bit smaller, I like to put them inside my tote and bring them on the plane myself so I can keep an eye on them. Personally, I use the Longchamp Le Pliage because I like having a zipper rather than an open tote but if you prefer open totes, the classics are the Louis Vuitton Neverfull or the Saint Laurent tote / Valentino Rockstud tote which has a more understated look out of the two.
2. Black Shoulder Bag // Chanel Classic Flap, YSL Sunset, YSL Loulou
For me, another absolute must is a medium-sized black shoulder bag so I can carry day-to-day essentials around. A black shoulder bag is something I do actually use almost every day so it has to have a decent size for me to put in keys, a wallet, my phone, tissues, hand cream, face mask etc. My personal favourite is the Chanel Medium Classic Flap in black caviar leather. I know that one is quite pricey but if you do have the funds and like that bag, I recommend getting it sooner than later because Chanel keeps raising their prices like 2-3 times a year now. Other bags I can recommend are both from Saint Laurent; the YSL Medium Sunset bag and the YSL Small Loulou bag. I used to have them both and they're of amazing quality for the price that they are. I'm a big fan of Saint Laurent bags because they make extremely timeless handbags with great quality but with a lower price tag compared to other brands.
3. Small Black Crossbody Bag // Chanel Mini Flap, Fendi Mini Baguette, YSL Mini Lou
I think a small black crossbody bag is another essential. I especially recommend having one in black because it can easily be dressed up but also can be worn casually. For example my Chanel Mini Rectangular I often wear when I go to a fancy dinner or to a cocktail bar, things like that because it goes with dressed-up outfits perfectly. But I also wear it casually with jeans and a t-shirt during the day since it is just such a versatile and timeless piece. If you don't like the Chanel version or prefer to buy something a little cheaper, I also recommend the Fendi Mini Baguette or the YSL Mini Lou.
4. A Special Occasion Bag // A Pop of Colour
What I mean by that is just having one bag that's more unique in your collection. Something that has a pop of colour like a lipstick red, a Tiffany blue, a bright pink, a sunflower yellow etc. or maybe just a limited edition version of a bag which has a different and unique pattern, rhinestones all over like the Prada Crystal Re-Edition 2000 or a pearl-embellished bag like my Chanel Pearl Mini. Just something that can make a plain outfit look like you put a lot more effort into it than you actually did. I love wearing my red Chanel Mini with basic outfits because it automatically makes it look a lot more fun and unique. I don't have a specific bag to recommend because it comes down to what you prefer .. colour, pattern, texture or whatever but another example would be the Fendi Shearling Baguette or the Bottega Veneta Cassette.
5. A Travel Bag // Longchamp Backpack, LV Palm Springs Backpack, LV Damier Ebene Canvas
This one sounds a bit strange but what I mean by that is a bag that is sturdy, something you can get caught in the rain with without having to worry about it; something that you can throw around a bit more. So think of a big city trip like you go to London, Paris, New York.. you do a lot of walking, tourist stuff, you go to museums, you might grab a coffee to go or you get a hotdog while walking from one sight to another, you might be far from your hotel and get caught in the rain. When doing things like that, you wouldn't walk around with an open tote, a Chanel lambskin bag or a Louis Vuitton monogram bag with untreated vachetta leather. So I recommend having something like the Louis Vuitton Alma BB in Damier Ebene, the Givenchy Mini Antigona in the smooth calfskin, a Louis Vuitton Palm Springs backpack (since it has the black leather instead of vachetta). Or maybe you even opt for lower-end bags like a Longchamp backpack or the Polene Numero Un Mini. I think having something very worry-free that can easily be wiped down, doesn't get scratched or you actually don't care to stain it with something, is a definite essential.
